Becky Wilkes (b.1956) lives with her husband on Eagle Mountain Lake in Azle, TX. Educated as a Chemical Engineer at Texas A&M, she spent much of her life as a stay-at-home mother of four children who have blessed her with a multitude of grandchildren. Thus began her study of chaos and order. Her current vocation is a blend of urban archeologist, anthropologist, sociologist, trash collector, and photographer.
She seeks beauty in the under appreciated and discarded elements of society. Through her artwork, she demands attention to their being, navigating the complexities of their displacement and their odds of survival.
For many years, Wilkes’ artwork gravitated to the treatment of the physical world, how trash migrates through the watershed into our larger bodies of water. When the pandemic began, her parents migrated to her home, where she celebrated the beauty of the aging body and the complex and mature relationships that occur when death is prescient. Wilkes continued this exploration and the will to adapt and persevere with her dear friend and fellow artist, Bill Barter (1931-2025). Following his death, she continues her work aggregating the ephemera and refining memories which surround and burden families after a loss.
